Harvest Alternatives: 10 Time Tracking and Invoicing Tools for 2026

Short answer: Clockify if you want invoicing and approvals for a fraction of the price, Toggl Track if you want a nicer timer and profitability reports, Everhour if your work lives in Asana or Jira, Paymo if you want project management in the same tool, FreshBooks if accounting matters more than tracking, and Kimai or solidtime if you'd rather self-host.

Harvest's pricing is simple. Free covers 1 seat and 2 projects. Teams is $9 per seat per month billed annually ($108/seat/year) or $11 monthly. Enterprise is $14 billed annually or $17.50 monthly.

The catch is what sits on Enterprise. Timesheet approval, profitability reporting, the activity log, and required notes are all Enterprise only. For a 10-person agency that wants managers to sign off on hours, that's 10 x $14 x 12 = $1,680 a year, up from $1,080 on Teams.

So which part of Harvest do you actually use, and who does it cheaper? Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked October 2026.

What Harvest Actually Does Well

Harvest's best trick is that time turns into an invoice with almost no friction. Invoicing and expense tracking are on every plan, even Free, and Teams adds accounting and payment integrations. If you bill clients by the hour, that loop matters more than any timer feature.

It also connects to Harvest Forecast for scheduling, and the timer is clean enough that people actually use it. There's no per-feature add-on maze, either: three public plans and a custom tier.

Harvest is good software. This post is about the moments when the plan you need costs more than the job is worth.

When to Leave Harvest

  1. You need approvals. Timesheet approval is Enterprise only at $14/seat. Clockify includes it on Standard at $5.49, and My Hours on Pro at $8.
  2. You want profitability without Enterprise. Harvest keeps profitability reports on Enterprise. Toggl Premium and Clockify Pro include labor cost or profit reporting.
  3. You track in a project tool all day. Everhour puts the timer inside Asana and Jira tasks.
  4. You want project management in the same app. Paymo bundles tasks, Kanban, Gantt (on Pro), time, and invoices.
  5. You want to self-host. Harvest is cloud only.

1. Toggl Track

A nicer timer, with profitability reporting one tier down from where Harvest puts it.

Strengths:

  • One-click timers across browser, desktop, and mobile
  • Billable rates and project estimates on Starter
  • Labor costs, profitability reports, fixed-fee projects, and timesheet approvals on Premium
  • Free plan for up to 3 users

Weaknesses:

  • Premium ($16/user yearly) costs more than Harvest Enterprise ($14)
  • Invoicing is less central than in Harvest
  • Monthly billing is steep: $12 Starter, $24 Premium

Pricing: Starter $9 per user per month billed yearly ($12 monthly). Premium $16 yearly ($24 monthly). Enterprise is custom.

Best for: Agencies that care more about profitability reporting than invoicing. See our Toggl alternatives guide for the other direction.

2. Clockify

Harvest's feature set for a lot less money.

Strengths:

  • Invoicing, recurring invoices, and timesheet approval on Standard ($5.49/seat yearly)
  • Expenses, budgets, labor cost and profit, and scheduling on Pro ($7.99)
  • Free plan with unlimited time tracking and reports
  • Kiosk mode for shared devices

Weaknesses:

  • Every active or invited user takes a paid seat
  • Expenses are a Pro feature, where Harvest includes them on every plan
  • The interface is busier than Harvest's

Pricing: Per seat per month, yearly / monthly: Basic $3.99 / $4.99, Standard $5.49 / $6.99, Pro $7.99 / $9.99, Enterprise $11.99 / $14.99.

Best for: Agencies that want approvals and invoicing without Harvest Enterprise pricing.

3. Everhour

Time tracking that lives inside your project tool.

Strengths:

  • Native integrations with Asana, Jira, and 40+ other tools
  • Budgets, billing, and invoicing on the Team plan
  • Free for up to 5 seats (without integrations)
  • 14-day trial of every feature

Weaknesses:

  • 5-seat minimum on Team
  • Free plan excludes integrations, which is the point of Everhour
  • No monthly price listed on the pricing page

Pricing: Team is $8.50 per seat per month billed annually. Annual billing saves 15%. Custom plans from 50 seats are quoted.

Best for: Teams that plan in Asana or Jira and bill clients from tracked time.

4. Hubstaff

Time tracking with proof of work.

Strengths:

  • Clients and invoices from the Starter plan
  • Project budgets and expenses on Grow
  • Payments and payroll on Team
  • Activity levels and screenshots for remote teams

Weaknesses:

  • Monitoring features can feel invasive, so set expectations first
  • 2-seat minimum on every plan
  • Add-ons (Insights, Locations, more screenshots) cost extra per seat

Pricing: Per seat per month, yearly / monthly: Starter $4.99 / $7, Grow $7.50 / $9, Team $10 / $12. Enterprise is $25/seat/month billed annually. 14-day trial, no card.

Best for: Agencies with remote contractors where clients want evidence of hours.

5. Paymo

Project management, time tracking, and invoicing in one app.

Strengths:

  • Time tracking and unlimited invoices on every plan, Free included
  • Estimates, expenses, and recurring invoices on Plus
  • Gantt charts, employee scheduling, and timesheet approvals on Pro
  • 15-day trial, no card

Weaknesses:

  • Free and Solo are 1 user only
  • Monthly prices after the intro promo are higher than Harvest Teams
  • More to learn if you only want a timer

Pricing: Billed monthly, per user: Solo $9.9, Plus $15.9, Pro $23.9. New accounts get lower prices for the first 3 months ($5.9, $10.9, $16.9). Annual billing is discounted by up to 40%, but the page doesn't show annual amounts.

Best for: Small agencies that want to replace Harvest and a separate PM tool at once.

6. FreshBooks

Accounting software with time tracking built in.

Strengths:

  • Unlimited time tracking on every plan
  • Full accounting: invoices, payments, and reporting
  • Payroll available as an add-on

Weaknesses:

  • Plans cap billable clients: 5 on Lite, 50 on Plus
  • Each extra team member costs $11/month
  • The price jumps to the regular rate after the 4-month promo

Pricing: Regular monthly prices are Lite $23, Plus $43, and Premium $70, with an 80% discount for the first 4 months at signup. Select is quoted. Team members are $11/month each.

Best for: Solo consultants who want accounting and time in one bill.

7. Timely

Automatic time tracking for people who forget timers.

Strengths:

  • Tracks app and web activity in the background
  • AI drafts timesheets you review and approve
  • Billable rates, budgets, and "mark as billed" to avoid double billing
  • Accounting integrations on Premium

Weaknesses:

  • Starter caps you at 5 users and 20 projects
  • Premium ($16/user yearly) costs more than Harvest Enterprise
  • No built-in invoicing on Harvest's level

Pricing: Per user per month, yearly / monthly: Starter $9 / $11, Premium $16 / $20, Unlimited $22 / $28.

Best for: Consultancies losing billable hours to bad memory.

8. My Hours

Simple tracking with approvals at a low price.

Strengths:

  • Free for up to 5 active users
  • Pro includes an approval workflow with audit log, plus rate and budget calculations
  • Unlimited projects and clients on paid plans
  • 14-day Pro trial, no card

Weaknesses:

  • Fewer integrations than Harvest
  • The pricing page doesn't make clear which plan includes invoicing, so check first
  • No automatic tracking

Pricing: Per user per month, monthly / yearly: Basic $5 / $4, Pro $9 / $8. Enterprise is custom.

Best for: Small teams that need approvals and don't want Enterprise pricing.

9. solidtime (Open Source)

A modern, open-source tracker with billing.

Strengths:

  • AGPL-3.0 licensed, free to self-host

  • Clean timer and timesheet views
  • Desktop app with automatic activity tracking

Weaknesses:

  • Free cloud plan is 1 user
  • Younger project, fewer integrations
  • Self-hosting means you own uptime and backups

Pricing: Cloud Solo is free for 1 user. Professional is €8 per user per month billed annually or €9 monthly (excluding VAT). Self-hosted is free.

  • AGPL-3.0 licensed and free to self-host
  • Invoice templates (5 on cloud Standard, 10 on Professional)
  • Very cheap hosted cloud

  • Self-hosting takes real setup

Pricing: Cloud, per user per month, yearly / monthly: Standard €2.99 / €3.99, Professional €3.99 / €4.99 (excluding taxes). Self-hosted is free.

Best for: Technical freelancers and small agencies who want to stop paying per seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest alternative to Harvest?

Clockify. Its Standard plan is $5.49 per seat per month billed yearly and includes invoicing and timesheet approval. If you can self-host, solidtime and Kimai are free.

Does Harvest have a free plan?

Yes. Harvest Free covers 1 seat and 2 projects, and includes invoicing and expense tracking.

Which Harvest alternative has timesheet approvals?

Clockify (Standard and up), Toggl Track (Premium), My Hours (Pro), and Paymo (Pro). On Harvest itself, approvals are Enterprise only.

Is Toggl better than Harvest?

For profitability reporting, Toggl Premium includes it, while Harvest puts it on Enterprise. For invoicing, Harvest is stronger, with invoices on every plan. On price, Toggl Starter and Harvest Teams both cost $9 per user per month billed yearly.

Is there an open source Harvest alternative?

Yes. Kimai and solidtime are both AGPL-3.0 and free to self-host. Kimai includes invoice templates, and solidtime adds billing and invoicing on its paid cloud plan.

The Honest Take

Harvest is still one of the smoothest ways to go from tracked hours to a paid invoice. On Teams, at $9 a seat, it's fair.

The trouble is Enterprise. If you need approvals or profitability, you're paying $14 a seat for features Clockify includes at $5.49 and Toggl includes at $16 with more reporting. Everhour fits teams that live in Asana or Jira. Paymo replaces Harvest and a PM tool at once. Kimai and solidtime hand you the server.

Figure out which Enterprise feature you actually need. That usually picks the tool for you.
