Mixpanel Alternatives: 8 Product Analytics Tools Compared for 2026

Short answer: PostHog is the best free and open source pick (1M events a month free, and its per-event rate lands around $153/month at 5M events). Amplitude is still the best fit for dedicated growth teams who live in funnels and experiments. Mitzu and Kubit are the warehouse-native options if your events already sit in Snowflake or BigQuery. And for privacy, self-hosted OpenPanel or Countly Lite keep every event on your own servers.

Mixpanel's pricing looks gentle on day one. The Free plan covers up to 1M events a month with unlimited seats. Growth "starts at $0" because the first 1M events are free. After that, the published rate is $0.00028 per event, which is $0.28 per 1,000. So a product doing 5M events a month pays for 4M of them: about $1,120/month at list rate, before whatever volume discount the calculator on mixpanel.com/pricing applies. Growth tops out at 20M events. Past that it's Enterprise, which is "let's chat," and Mixpanel's own docs say the MTU-based Enterprise plan starts at $20,000 a year.

That's what sends people searching. Add autocapture, a mobile app, or one chatty feature, and the bill jumps while the business hasn't changed at all.

Want the dashboard without the event bill? There's a build path

If what your team really wants is one internal screen for funnels, retention, and revenue, pulled from data you already own, the SaaS Metrics Kit gives you that frontend: 50 screens covering MRR/ARR, churn, cohorts, funnels, product analytics, NPS, and experiments in Next.js + Tailwind + shadcn/ui. To be clear about what it is: dashboard UI with seed data. It isn't an event-tracking pipeline, so you still need somewhere to collect events (your database, a warehouse, or one of the tools below). $131 solo. Live demo.

What Mixpanel Actually Does Well

Mixpanel's report builder is still the fastest way for a PM to answer "did people who did X come back and do Y?" without SQL. Funnels, retention, flows, and cohorts are a few clicks, and unlimited seats on every plan means the whole company sees the same numbers. Experiments and feature flags are now included on Free and Growth too, which closes a gap that used to push teams toward PostHog.

The basic funnel chart is table stakes everywhere now. Where the alternatives pull ahead is price shape, where the data lives, and bundling things Mixpanel leaves out.

When to Leave Mixpanel

Four signals:

  1. Events grow faster than revenue. If your Mixpanel line item doubled this year and ARR didn't, the per-event model is working against you.
  2. Your data team already built a warehouse. Paying to send the same events to Mixpanel and to Snowflake means paying for storage twice, and the two copies eventually disagree.
  3. You need data on your own servers. Healthcare, fintech, EU-only customers, or a security review that asks where every event goes.
  4. You want replay, flags, and surveys in one tool. Stitching three vendors together costs more than the analytics bill does.

1. PostHog

The all-in-one open source platform, and the most common landing spot for teams leaving Mixpanel.

Strengths:

  • Product analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, and surveys in one place
  • 1M events a month free, resetting monthly whether or not you pay
  • Per-event rates drop with volume: $0.00005 from 1M to 2M, $0.0000343 from 2M to 15M, down to $0.000009 past 250M

Weaknesses:

  • The self-hosted "hobby deploy" (MIT, Docker Compose) is officially unsupported and recommended only up to roughly 300K events a month
  • Paid-plan features are Cloud-only

Pricing: 1M events free. At 5M events a month you'd pay about $50 for the 1M-2M band plus about $103 for the next 3M, so roughly $153/month for analytics. Replay and flags bill separately.

Best for: Engineering-led startups that want one tool and a price that stays sane as events climb.

posthog.com

2. Amplitude

The closest like-for-like swap, with more depth on experimentation and growth workflows.

Strengths:

  • Mature behavioral analytics: funnels, retention, pathfinding, predictive cohorts
  • Free plan covers 2M events a month, double Mixpanel's
  • Plus plan starts at $0 with the first 2M events free and scales to 70M

Weaknesses:

  • Growth and Enterprise are custom quotes, so real pricing only appears after a sales call
  • Heavier to learn than Mixpanel for casual users
  • It absorbed June (the simple B2B analytics tool shut down in August 2025), but it's still an enterprise product at heart

Pricing: Free to 2M events. Plus is usage-based past that (use the estimator on the pricing page). Growth and Enterprise are quote-only.

Best for: Growth teams with a dedicated analyst who'll use the advanced features.

3. Heap (now part of Contentsquare)

Autocapture first, so you can answer questions about events you forgot to track.

Strengths:

  • Captures clicks, pageviews, and form events automatically; define events after the fact
  • Free plan includes core charts, 6 months of history, and SSO

Weaknesses:

  • Priced on sessions, which is hard to compare against event pricing
  • Growth needs the snippet installed before you get an estimate; Pro and Premier are custom
  • Autocapture data needs curation or the event list turns into a junk drawer

Pricing: Free up to 10K monthly sessions. Growth, Pro, and Premier: see pricing page (estimate or quote).

Best for: Teams without much engineering time for instrumentation.

4. OpenPanel

An open source product analytics tool that deliberately looks and feels like Mixpanel.

Strengths:

  • Events, funnels, retention, and user profiles in a familiar layout
  • Self-host free with unlimited events
  • Cloud pricing is flat by event volume: every feature, unlimited users, unlimited projects

Weaknesses:

  • Much younger and smaller than Mixpanel or PostHog
  • Free cloud access is a 30-day trial, not a permanent free tier

Pricing: Cloud runs from $2.50/month for 5K events to $900/month for 50M. The 5M tier is $250/month ($2,500/year). Self-hosted is free.

Best for: Small teams who like Mixpanel's UX and want it cheaper or on their own box.

5. Kubit

Warehouse-native analytics priced on monthly tracked users, with no charge for events.

Strengths:

  • Queries your warehouse directly on Pro and Enterprise ("Bring Your Own Warehouse")
  • No fees for events, seats, or integrations, so event volume stops being the cost driver
  • Free Starter tier plus a 30-day unlimited trial, no card needed

Weaknesses:

  • You need a warehouse with clean event tables already; this isn't a tracking SDK play
  • Warehouse compute costs land on your cloud bill
  • MTU pricing punishes products with lots of low-activity users

Pricing: Starter is free for 10K MTU ($0.008 per extra MTU). Pro is $199/month for 100K MTU ($0.006 per extra). Enterprise is custom.

Best for: Data-mature teams with high events per user, where per-event pricing is brutal.

kubit.ai

6. Mitzu

Warehouse-native analytics priced on editor seats, with unlimited events.

Strengths:

  • Queries data in place on Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Athena, Postgres, Trino, Firebolt, and ClickHouse
  • Unlimited events on every plan
  • No-SQL report builder on top of a semantic layer, so PMs can self-serve
  • Joins product events with billing, CRM, and support data that already lives in the warehouse

Weaknesses:

  • Seat pricing adds up once lots of people want to build reports
  • Same prerequisite as Kubit: someone has to own the warehouse modeling

Pricing: Analyst is $149/month ($134 billed yearly) with 3 editor seats. Team is $749/month ($675 yearly) with 10 seats. Enterprise is custom.

Best for: Teams with a small group of analysts and a big event volume.

7. Countly

Privacy-first analytics that you can run entirely on your own infrastructure.

Strengths:

  • Countly Lite is free, open source, and self-hosted
  • Mobile, web, and desktop SDKs, plus push notifications and remote config
  • Built for GDPR, COPPA, and HIPAA environments where data residency matters

Weaknesses:

  • The best capabilities sit in Flex and Enterprise; check which features are in Lite before you commit
  • Self-hosting means you own upgrades, backups, and scaling

Pricing: Lite is free. Flex (managed private cloud) starts at $175/month with a 14-day trial. Enterprise (self-hosted, everything bundled) is custom.

Best for: Regulated industries and mobile-heavy products that need data to stay in-house.

countly.com

8. Pendo

Product analytics bundled with in-app guides, NPS, and feedback.

Strengths:

  • Analytics, in-app guides, and NPS surveys in one tool
  • Free plan includes product analytics, guides, roadmaps, and NPS up to 500 MAU

Weaknesses:

  • Every paid tier is a custom quote
  • Analysis depth trails Mixpanel and Amplitude on complex funnels and cohorts
  • MAU pricing gets expensive for consumer-scale products

Pricing: Free to 500 MAU. Base, Core, and Ultimate: see pricing page.

Best for: B2B SaaS teams where the PM also owns onboarding and in-app messaging. (Userpilot is the other name here: Starter is $299/month, and funnels and retention start on Growth, from $849/month.)

9. Build Your Own Metrics Dashboard

Plenty of teams would be happier with one internal screen that shows activation funnels, retention cohorts, and MRR side by side, built on data they already collect in Postgres or a warehouse. Mixpanel can't show revenue properly, and ChartMogul-style tools can't show product behavior. Your own dashboard can show both.

What this looks like:

  • Events land in your database or warehouse (your own tracking table, or a PostHog/OpenPanel export)
  • The SaaS Metrics Kit provides the frontend: 50 screens covering funnels, cohorts, product analytics, NPS, experiments, MRR/ARR, and churn in Next.js + Tailwind + shadcn/ui
  • One-time purchase instead of a bill that grows with every event

It's the most work on this list: you write the queries and own the pipeline. But you own the numbers too. If revenue metrics are the bigger gap, our ChartMogul alternatives comparison covers that side.

Recommendation by Profile

You Pick
Early-stage, want one tool for everything PostHog
Growth team with an analyst, running experiments Amplitude
Little engineering time for tracking Heap
Love Mixpanel's UX, want it cheaper or self-hosted OpenPanel
Warehouse in place, high events per user Kubit
Warehouse in place, a few analysts Mitzu
Regulated industry or mobile-first Countly
PM owns onboarding and in-app guides Pendo
Want product and revenue metrics on one internal screen Build it (SaaS Metrics Kit)

Pricing at a Glance (5M Events/Month, Monthly Billing)

Product Basis ~Monthly cost at 5M events
Mixpanel (Growth) Per event after 1M free ~$1,120 at list, before volume discounts
PostHog Per event after 1M free ~$153
Amplitude (Plus) Per event after 2M free See estimator
Heap Sessions Quote
OpenPanel Cloud Event tier $250
OpenPanel self-hosted Free Hosting only
Kubit (Pro) MTU $199 if you're under 100K MTU
Mitzu (Analyst) Editor seats $149 plus warehouse compute
Countly Flex Usage From $175
Pendo MAU Quote
SaaS Metrics Kit One-time $131 once, plus your hosting

Directional, as always. Kubit and Mitzu are the outliers: no per-event charge, so a 5x jump in tracking barely moves the bill (your warehouse compute moves instead).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free alternative to Mixpanel?

PostHog for most teams: 1M free events a month, plus replay, flags, and surveys. Amplitude's free plan is bigger at 2M events if you only need analytics. Mixpanel's own Free plan (1M events) is decent too, so switching purely for the free tier rarely pays off.

What is the best open source Mixpanel alternative?

PostHog is the most complete, though its self-hosted version is unsupported and meant for small volumes. OpenPanel is the closest to Mixpanel's look and runs self-hosted with unlimited events. Countly Lite is the privacy-first option with strong mobile SDKs.

Mixpanel vs Amplitude vs PostHog: which should I pick?

Mixpanel for fast self-serve reports across the company. Amplitude if a dedicated growth team will use predictive cohorts and experiments daily. PostHog if engineers drive analytics and you want replay and flags in one tool at a lower per-event price.

Can I self-host a Mixpanel alternative?

Yes. OpenPanel and Countly Lite are both free to self-host. PostHog's hobby deploy works too, but it's recommended only under roughly 300K events a month. If "self-host" really means "keep data in my infrastructure," Kubit and Mitzu get you there without running an analytics server.

Which Mixpanel alternative is cheaper at scale?

At 5M events a month, PostHog (~$153) and OpenPanel ($250) cost a fraction of Mixpanel's list rate. Past 20M events, the warehouse-native tools usually win because they don't charge per event. Self-hosting is cheapest on paper, but count the engineering hours before you celebrate.

The Honest Take

Mixpanel is still very good. If your event volume is steady and the whole team uses it, switching probably isn't worth it. The alternatives win on price shape: PostHog and OpenPanel on cost per event, Kubit and Mitzu on skipping event pricing entirely, Countly on data residency, Amplitude on depth, Heap on autocapture, and Pendo on bundling guides.

Work out which of those problems you actually have. Then pick the tool that solves that one. And if what the team really keeps asking for is one internal dashboard with product and revenue numbers together, build it on your own data and stop paying per event to look at it.
