BambooHR Alternatives: 9 Options Compared for 2026

BambooHR finally publishes list prices. Core is $10 per employee per month, Pro is $17, and Elite is $25, with a $250/month flat minimum for companies at 25 employees or fewer. So a 50-person company on Pro is looking at $850/month, or $10,200 a year, before volume discounts.

That's the number on the page. The number on the invoice is usually bigger. Payroll, benefits administration, time and attendance, and global employment are all add-ons, and none of them has a published price. You find out what they cost on a sales call. That's where most "BambooHR alternatives" searches start: someone got the full quote, did the math for next year's headcount, and started shopping.

Nine alternatives below, every price pulled from the vendor's own pricing page in September 2026. Where a vendor only quotes, we say so rather than guess.

Coming from an enterprise system instead? Our Workday alternatives comparison covers the bigger-company end of this market.

What BambooHR Actually Does Well

Credit where it's due. BambooHR is the HRIS that employees open without being chased. Records, time off, onboarding, and reporting are clean and quick to set up, and the tier structure is now easy to read: Core covers the basics, Pro adds 360 review cycles, 1:1s, and recognition, and Elite adds compensation management, salary benchmarking, and HR benchmarks.

It also rewards staying. Volume discounts apply automatically as headcount grows, there's a 15% discount when you bundle Payroll and Benefits Administration (US employees only), and nonprofits get an extra 15% off. You can pick month-to-month terms or a longer contract.

So the real question is whether you're paying for the right slice of it.

When to Leave BambooHR

Three signals:

  1. The add-on quote doubled the list price. Once payroll, benefits, and time tracking land on top of Pro, compare the total against tools that bundle payroll by default.
  2. You're under 25 people. The $250/month floor means a 12-person team pays about $20.83 per head on Core. Several tools below cost less at that size.
  3. Your team isn't mostly in the US. BambooHR's payroll and benefits add-ons cover US employees only. Global hiring runs through its Remote partnership, which is one more vendor relationship.

1. Gusto

The payroll-first option, and the most transparent pricing in the category.

Strengths:

  • Payroll, tax filings, and payments are the core product, with unlimited payroll runs on every plan
  • Three clear tiers: Simple ($49/mo + $6/person), Plus ($80/mo + $12/person), Premium ($180/mo + $22/person)
  • Plus adds multi-state payroll, next-day pay, and time tracking
  • Premium adds performance and compensation management, certified HR experts, and a dedicated service advisor
  • No contracts, free account setup

Weaknesses:

  • Simple is single-state payroll only, with basic PTO policies
  • The HR features that compete with BambooHR Pro (performance, comp) sit on the $22/person tier
  • US-focused; global contractor payments are an add-on

Best for: US companies under about 100 people where payroll is the thing that has to be right every two weeks.

2. Rippling

HR, IT, and payroll on one employee record.

Strengths:

  • Onboarding can provision payroll, apps, and devices in one flow
  • Modular, so you buy the pieces you use
  • Strong automation across HR, IT, and finance
  • Handles employees and contractors in many countries

Weaknesses:

  • Quote only. The pricing page is a form that asks for headcount and HQ country
  • Modules stack up fast once you turn on several
  • More setup than a pure HRIS

Best for: 50 to 1,000 people who are tired of running HR onboarding and IT onboarding as two separate checklists.

3. HiBob

The mid-market HRIS people pick for culture and employee experience.

Strengths:

  • Interface built for employees and managers as much as for HR admins
  • Good org visibility and flexible structures for companies that aren't a neat hierarchy
  • Solid analytics and engagement tools at mid-market size

Weaknesses:

  • Quote only; the pricing page is a demo request
  • Payroll typically comes through partners
  • More than a 30-person company needs

Best for: 100 to 1,000 employees, often spread across countries, who care about the employee-facing side as much as the admin side.

4. Justworks

Payroll software with a clear path to a full PEO.

Strengths:

  • Payroll plan is $8/employee/month + $50/month base, and includes HR tools, onboarding and offboarding, PTO management, and access to time tracking
  • PEO Basic ($79/employee/month, no base fee) adds compliance support, HR consulting, 24/7 support, and 401(k)
  • PEO Plus ($124/employee/month) adds medical, dental, and vision administration, HSA/FSA, and mental health and fertility benefits
  • EOR for international hires at $599/employee/month

Weaknesses:

  • Org chart, custom reporting, and performance management integrations aren't on the Payroll plan
  • The PEO tiers are a big step up in cost, though they replace a benefits broker
  • Lighter on talent management than BambooHR Pro

Best for: Small US companies that want payroll now and big-company health benefits later, from the same vendor.

5. Deel

The pick when "HR" really means "people in six countries."

Strengths:

  • Deel HR Core starts at $5/employee/month: worker profiles, org chart, time off, workflows, approvals, and people analytics
  • Advanced tier adds performance, goals, learning, and surveys; Elite adds workforce planning and compensation
  • Contractors from $49/month, US PEO at $125/employee/month, EOR at $599/employee/month
  • Month-to-month, no long-term commitment required

Weaknesses:

  • Advanced and Elite HR tier prices aren't published
  • Best value only if you also use Deel for contractors or EOR
  • A lot of product to learn if you're a single-country team

Best for: Distributed teams already paying Deel for contractors or EOR who want the HRIS on the same data.

6. Zoho People

The budget answer, and more capable than the price suggests.

Strengths:

  • Free forever for up to 5 users (employee database, time off, documents)
  • Paid plans per user per month, billed annually: Essential HR $1.25, Professional $2, Premium $3, Enterprise $4.50 (monthly billing is $1.50, $2.50, $3.50, $5)
  • Premium includes performance, compensation, engagement, and advanced analytics
  • Plays nicely with Zoho Payroll, Recruit, and the rest of the suite

Weaknesses:

  • 5-user minimum on paid plans
  • The interface feels functional and a bit dated
  • Payroll is a separate Zoho product

Best for: Cost-sensitive teams, especially ones already running Zoho CRM or Books.

zoho.com/people

7. Factorial

An all-in-one HR platform aimed squarely at SMBs.

Strengths:

  • Starts at $8/user/month, with Factorial Core included in every plan
  • Plans are assembled to fit, so you skip modules you won't use
  • One vendor for core HR plus the add-ons you choose

Weaknesses:

  • Past the starting price, you're requesting a tailored quote
  • No fixed public tiers to compare side by side
  • Payroll depth varies by country

Best for: 20 to 200 person companies that want one tool for core HR and time tracking, and are fine negotiating a custom plan.

8. OrangeHRM

Open-source HRIS you can host yourself.

Strengths:

  • OrangeHRM Starter is free and open source (GPL)
  • Covers employee records, leave, time, and recruitment
  • Host it where you want; data stays on your infrastructure
  • Paid Advanced edition exists if you want support

Weaknesses:

  • Advanced edition pricing is quote only
  • You own hosting, upgrades, and backups on Starter
  • Dated interface, and no payroll

Best for: Teams with an IT function that want data residency and zero per-employee fees.

9. Build Your Own HR Tool with the HR Dashboard Kit

This one's for a specific buyer. An agency building HR software for a client. A startup where HR features are part of the product. A company with its own dev team that wants the employee directory, leave flow, and review cycles in a codebase it controls.

For them, per-employee pricing looks backwards. At $17/employee on BambooHR Pro, a 200-person company spends $40,800 a year on list price alone, and pays it again next year.

The HR Dashboard Kit is a starting codebase for that build:

  • Screens: 48
  • People: Employee directory, profiles, onboarding and offboarding
  • Time: Leave requests and approvals, attendance
  • Money and talent: Payroll screens, performance reviews, recruitment pipeline
  • Stack: Next.js + Tailwind + shadcn/ui, wired to Supabase (auth, Postgres, file storage)
  • Price: $131 solo, one-time

Be realistic about scope. The kit gives you the app and the data layer. It doesn't file payroll taxes, run benefits enrollment, or handle compliance, and your team still owns hardening, testing, and deployment before real employee data goes in. Plenty of companies pair it with Gusto or Justworks for payroll and build everything else themselves.

BambooHR Elite $25/employee/mo $15,000 + add-ons

Justworks Payroll $50/mo + $8/employee $5,400
Justworks PEO Basic $79/employee/mo $47,400 (includes PEO services)
Deel HR Core $5/employee/mo $3,000
Zoho People Premium $3/user/mo (annual) $1,800
Factorial From $8/user/mo From $4,800
OrangeHRM Starter Free, self-hosted Hosting and your time
HR Dashboard Kit One-time $131 once, plus Supabase hosting and dev time

Two things jump out. Gusto Plus costs less than BambooHR Pro at 50 people and already includes payroll, which BambooHR charges extra for. And Justworks PEO looks expensive until you compare it against a benefits broker plus a payroll provider plus an HRIS.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does BambooHR cost in 2026?

BambooHR publishes $10 (Core), $17 (Pro), and $25 (Elite) per employee per month, with a $250/month flat rate for companies with 25 or fewer employees. Payroll, benefits administration, time and attendance, and global employment are add-ons with no published price. Volume discounts apply automatically, and bundling Payroll with Benefits Administration takes 15% off.

What is the cheapest alternative to BambooHR?

Zoho People. It's free for up to 5 users, and Premium (with performance and compensation) is $3/user/month billed annually, so a 50-person team pays about $1,800 a year. OrangeHRM Starter is free if you're willing to host it yourself.

Which BambooHR alternative includes payroll?

Gusto and Justworks include payroll in every plan, with published prices. Rippling and Deel offer payroll as part of quoted packages. Zoho sells Zoho Payroll as a separate product, and OrangeHRM doesn't do payroll.

Is BambooHR worth it for a small company?

Under 25 employees, you're paying the $250/month minimum regardless of headcount, which works out to $3,000 a year. If payroll is the main need, Gusto Simple at $49/month + $6/person costs less for a 15-person team ($1,668/year) and includes payroll. BambooHR earns its price when you want the HR side (reviews, reporting, onboarding) done well.

How hard is it to migrate off BambooHR?

The HRIS data is the easy part: employee records, time-off balances, and documents export cleanly. Payroll is the hard part. Switch at a quarter boundary so tax filings stay clean, run one parallel payroll before cutting over, and avoid moving during open enrollment. For a 50-person company, plan on four to eight weeks.

The Honest Take

BambooHR is still a very good HRIS for 25 to 500 person US companies, and publishing prices made it easier to buy. The catch is that list price covers the HR side only. Once payroll and benefits are quoted on top, tools that bundle them (Gusto, Justworks) or charge a fraction for the HRIS (Zoho People, Deel HR Core) often come out ahead.

Pick by the job that hurts. Payroll: Gusto or Justworks. HR plus IT: Rippling. Culture at mid-market scale: HiBob. Global team: Deel. Budget: Zoho People. Data ownership: OrangeHRM. And if you're building HR software rather than buying it, start from code you own and skip the per-employee meter entirely.
