Zoho Desk Alternatives: 11 Help Desk Tools Compared for 2026

Short answer: Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like swap. Zendesk if you need deeper routing and a bigger app ecosystem. Help Scout if you want something simpler that agents enjoy using. HubSpot Service Hub if your CRM is HubSpot. Jira Service Management for internal IT and engineering-adjacent support. Zammad or FreeScout if you want to self-host and drop per-agent fees. And if support has to live inside your own product, build the interface and own it.

Zoho Desk is Zoho's help desk: ticketing across email, phone, chat and social, SLAs, a help center, Zia AI and tight links to Zoho CRM and the rest of the Zoho suite. Its biggest draw is value. There's a free plan for 3 users, and the paid tiers have historically been among the cheapest in the category.

One honest note on pricing. When we checked Zoho Desk's pricing page on 24 October 2026, it showed Express, Standard, Professional and Enterprise in Indian rupees for our region, with no USD option offered. Zoho prices by region, so we're not going to guess a dollar figure. Check the page from your own location, and remember annual billing is cheaper than monthly (Zoho advertises savings of up to 34%).

Why do teams look elsewhere? Usually one of three things. The interface is dense and setup takes longer than expected. Integrations outside the Zoho world are thinner than on Zendesk or Freshdesk. Or the team never adopted the rest of Zoho, so the main reason to pick Desk never paid off.

What Zoho Desk Actually Does Well

Zoho Desk is easy to underrate. The free plan for 3 users is usable for a real small team. Context-aware features like Zia, blueprints for guided processes, and multi-department setups are deeper than most tools at its price. And if you already use Zoho CRM, the link between deals and tickets is about as tight as it gets.

Teams rarely leave because Zoho Desk can't do something. They leave because getting it to do that thing took too long, or because the rest of their stack isn't Zoho.

When to Leave Zoho Desk

Three signals:

  1. Admin time is eating the savings. If configuration, layouts and workflows need a dedicated owner, the cheap seats aren't cheap anymore.
  2. Your stack isn't Zoho. Connecting to HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack-heavy workflows or a custom product takes more glue than on Zendesk or Freshdesk.
  3. Agents don't like the interface. Adoption problems quietly cost more than licence fees.

1. Freshdesk

The closest like-for-like, with a friendlier interface.

Strengths:

  • Ticketing, SLAs, automations and a help center in one product
  • Freddy AI Agent included, with the first 500 sessions free
  • Strong marketplace beyond any single suite

Weaknesses:

  • No permanent free plan anymore, only a 14-day trial
  • Copilot is an extra $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise
  • Extra AI sessions are $49 per 100

Pricing: Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent per month billed annually. More in Freshdesk Alternatives.

Best for: Teams who want what Zoho Desk does with less setup friction.

2. Zendesk

The category default, at a higher price.

Strengths:

  • Deep routing, triggers and SLAs
  • Large app marketplace
  • Mature help center, messaging and multi-brand support

Weaknesses:

  • Suite tiers cost much more than Zoho
  • Admin and configuration overhead
  • AI and add-ons push the bill up further

Pricing: Support Team $19, Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent per month billed annually; $25, $69 and $149 monthly. Enterprise is quote only. For open source options, see Zendesk Alternatives.

Best for: Larger teams who need maximum flexibility and integrations.

3. Help Scout

Simpler, calmer, and agents actually like it.

Strengths:

  • Clean shared inbox that feels like email to customers
  • Docs knowledge base sites on every plan
  • Free plan for up to 5 users

Weaknesses:

  • Fewer multi-department and process features than Zoho Desk

  • Pro has a 10-user minimum

Pricing: Free for 5 users, 1 inbox and 100 contacts a month. Standard $25, Plus $45 and Pro $75 per user per month billed annually (the page shows 16% off versus monthly). AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution. Full comparison in Help Scout Alternatives.

Best for: Small to mid-size teams that value simplicity over configurability.

4. HubSpot Service Hub

The Zoho Desk equivalent for HubSpot shops.

Strengths:

  • Tickets linked to the HubSpot CRM record
  • Free tools for up to 2 users
  • Knowledge base, customer portal and feedback surveys on Professional

Weaknesses:

  • Professional adds a required $1,500 one-time onboarding fee
  • Big jump from Starter to Professional
  • Best value only if you run HubSpot already

Pricing: Free for up to 2 users. Starter is listed at $7 per seat per month on annual billing or $20 monthly. Professional is $90 per seat per month annually or $100 monthly, plus $1,500 onboarding. Enterprise is $150 per seat per month plus $3,500 onboarding.

Best for: Teams whose sales and marketing already live in HubSpot.

A shared inbox for when support, sales and account managers work the same threads.

Strengths:

  • Collaboration on real email threads with comments and assignments
  • Email, SMS, chat and social in one workspace
  • Autopilot AI agent priced per conversation

Weaknesses:

  • Higher seat price than Zoho Desk
  • Starter caps at 10 seats
  • Copilot is $20 per seat extra below Enterprise

Pricing: Starter $25, Professional $65 and Enterprise $105 per seat per month billed annually; $35 and $85 monthly for the first two. More in Front Alternatives.

Best for: B2B teams where customer emails cross departments.

6. Hiver

A help desk that runs inside Gmail.

  • Quick to roll out

Weaknesses:

  • Tied to Google Workspace
  • Less depth than a standalone help desk
  • No free plan shown on the pricing page

Pricing: Growth $25 per user per month annually or $35 monthly. Pro $55 annually or $65 monthly.

Best for: Google Workspace teams who found Zoho Desk too heavy.

7. Jira Service Management

For IT, internal and engineering-adjacent support.

Strengths:

  • Tight link to Jira for escalating issues to engineering
  • Free for up to 3 agents
  • ITSM features like request types and approvals

Weaknesses:

  • Built for service desks, so customer-facing support feels clunky
  • Pricing varies with team size
  • Atlassian admin learning curve

Pricing: Free for 3 agents. On annual billing at the page's default team size, Standard showed $21.50 and Premium $55.28 per agent per month. Your rate depends on agent count, so plug in your own.

Best for: Teams whose tickets usually end up as Jira issues.

atlassian.com

8. LiveAgent

Chat, email and tickets for a low seat price.

Strengths:

  • Live chat, email, social and ticketing in one product
  • Clear annual discounts
  • 30-day free trial without a card

  • Busy interface
  • No free plan
  • Starter caps at 5 agents

Pricing: Starter $15, Team $29 and Business $49 per agent per month billed annually; $19, $35 and $59 monthly.

Best for: Small teams that want chat and tickets together on a budget.

9. Zammad

The most complete open source help desk.

Strengths:

  • Ticketing, SLAs, knowledge base and customer portal
  • Email, chat, social and phone channels
  • AGPL-3.0, active project (pushed to on 23 October 2026)

Weaknesses:

  • Rails application with Elasticsearch, so self-hosting needs real ops skills
  • You own upgrades, backups and deliverability
  • Hosted plans and support packages are priced in euros

Pricing: Free to self-host. Zammad's hosted plans are €7, €16 and €25 per agent per month on annual billing (€9, €18 and €27 monthly), excluding VAT. Self-hosted support packages start at €2,999 a year.

Best for: Teams who want a Zoho-level feature set without per-agent licence fees.

zammad.org

10. FreeScout

The lightweight open source option.

Strengths:

  • Runs on ordinary PHP and MySQL hosting
  • Simple shared mailbox interface
  • Paid modules add knowledge base, chat and workflows with lifetime licences

Weaknesses:

  • Email first
  • Features come piecemeal through modules
  • You run everything

Pricing: Free to self-host under AGPL-3.0. Some modules are paid one-time.

Best for: Small teams who want cheap, simple, self-hosted email support. More in Open Source Ticketing Systems.

11. Build Your Own with the Help Desk Kit

Some teams looking at Zoho Desk alternatives aren't really after another SaaS desk. They run a product or platform, and support should sit inside it: a customer portal, white-labeled support for their own clients, or a workflow specific to their industry. No hosted desk gives you that without fighting its design and its per-agent pricing.

The Help Desk Kit is the interface for that build. From the product config:

  • 110 screens across dashboard, tickets, live chat, knowledge base, customers, reports, team, automations and settings
  • Tickets: list, detail, Kanban board, SLA, macros, merge, priorities, canned responses
  • Customers: profiles, companies, health scores, segments, timeline
  • Automations: AI assist, assignments, escalations, SLA policies, triggers, workflows
  • Operations: CSAT surveys, QA scoring, team scheduling and workload
  • Stack: Next.js 16, Tailwind CSS v4, shadcn/ui, light and dark mode

Here's what's not in it. There's no backend, database or API logic. No WebSocket or real-time messaging infrastructure. No email or SMS notification delivery backend, so inbound email ingestion is yours to build. And no AI chatbot or natural language processing logic. Every screen runs on mock seed data until you connect your own.

Price: $131 solo, $199 team, $349 agency, one-time with no per-agent fee. Live demo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Zoho Desk?

Freshdesk for most teams, since it covers the same ground with a friendlier setup and a bigger marketplace. Zendesk if you need more routing depth and can pay for it. Help Scout if you'd trade configurability for simplicity.

Is Zoho Desk free?

Yes, there's a free plan with three user licences. Paid plans add features like SLAs, automations and Zia AI. Pricing is shown in regional currency, so check the page from your location.

Is there an open source alternative to Zoho Desk?

Zammad is the closest, with ticketing, SLAs, a knowledge base and a customer portal under AGPL-3.0. FreeScout is the lighter option. Both are free to self-host, and you take on hosting, upgrades and email deliverability.

Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zoho Desk?

It depends on your region, since Zoho shows local currency pricing. Freshdesk Growth is $19 per agent per month billed annually, and there's no permanent free plan. Zoho Desk's free plan for 3 users is cheaper for very small teams.

Can I replace Zoho Desk with something I host myself?

Yes. Zammad, FreeScout and osTicket are the common picks; we compare them in Open Source Ticketing Systems. If support needs to sit inside your own product, you can also build on a frontend like the Help Desk Kit and own the whole thing.

The Honest Take

Zoho Desk is good value, especially if you're already on Zoho CRM. The free plan alone makes it a reasonable first help desk.

People who leave usually aren't escaping a bad product. They're escaping setup effort, a stack mismatch, or an interface their agents never warmed to. Freshdesk and Help Scout fix the first and last. HubSpot Service Hub or Jira Service Management fix the stack question. Zammad and FreeScout fix the bill.

And if support is part of your product, the interface is worth owning outright.
