Help Scout Alternatives: 10 Options Compared for 2026

Short answer: for deeper ticketing and automation, Zendesk or Freshdesk. For a shared inbox that also runs sales and ops, Front or Missive. If your team lives in Gmail, Hiver. For a Shopify store, Gorgias. For AI-first chat support, Intercom or Helply (the company formerly called Groove). To stop paying per seat entirely, self-host FreeScout, which was modeled on Help Scout in the first place. And if support belongs inside your own product, build the interface once and own it.

Help Scout's public pricing is per user again. Standard is $25, Plus is $45 and Pro is $75 per user per month billed annually, and the page shows a 16% discount for annual over monthly. Pro has a 10-user minimum. Standard caps at 25 users and Plus at 50. The free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox and 100 contacts a month.

That "again" matters. In late 2024 Help Scout moved new plans to billing by contacts helped, took heavy criticism, and walked it back in 2025. Some accounts that switched are still on contact-based billing, so what you pay might not match the pricing page. That episode is why a lot of teams started shopping.

Here's the math for a 5-person team on Plus: $45 × 5 × 12 = $2,700 a year. Add AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, and 500 AI resolutions a month adds $4,500, for $7,200 total. Need Pro for the security features? The 10-user minimum means $9,000 a year even with 5 people on the team. Extra inboxes are $10 a month each and extra Docs sites $20.

What Help Scout Actually Does Well

Help Scout feels like email, and agents love that. New hires are productive on day one. Docs and the Beacon widget are clean enough that customers actually use them. AI Assist is on every plan, and AI Drafts and Summarize come with every paid plan at no extra charge. For a 3-to-20-person team that mostly answers email, it's still one of the best tools you can buy.

Most alternatives win by going deeper on one thing: routing, channels, commerce data, AI, or price.

When to Leave Help Scout

Four signals:

  1. Your workflows outgrew the rules engine. Skills-based routing, multi-step SLAs and approval flows are where Help Scout runs thin.
  2. AI Answers is becoming a real line item. At $0.75 per resolution, success gets expensive. 1,000 resolutions a month is $9,000 a year.
  3. You're stuck on legacy contact-based billing. A busy month shouldn't be a pricing event.
  4. Support has to live inside your product, on your data and your design.

1. Zendesk

The incumbent, with the most depth in the category.

Strengths:

  • Routing, SLAs, workforce management and analytics nobody else matches
  • Biggest marketplace and API ecosystem in support
  • AI agents and Copilot are mature

Weaknesses:

  • Setup and admin take real time
  • AI is billed on top: automated resolutions past your allowance and a $50/agent Copilot add-on
  • Overkill for a small email-first team

Pricing: Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 per agent per month billed annually. Monthly billing costs about 20% more. Full breakdown in Zendesk pricing explained.

Best for: Teams past 25 agents or with complex routing and compliance needs.

2. Freshdesk

The closest like-for-like help desk, cheaper at the entry tier.

Strengths:

  • Growth at $19/agent undercuts Help Scout Standard
  • Solid automation, SLAs and help center
  • 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions included on every plan

Weaknesses:

  • Freddy AI Copilot is $29/agent extra, on Pro and Enterprise only
  • No free plan now, just a 14-day trial
  • The UI is busier than Help Scout's

Pricing: Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent per month billed annually. Extra AI sessions are $49 per 100. See our Freshdesk alternatives for the reverse view.

Best for: Teams that want more ticketing structure for similar money.

3. Front

A shared inbox where support, sales and account management all work the same threads.

Strengths:

  • Email-native, so it keeps the feel Help Scout users like
  • Comments, assignments and SLAs on real email threads
  • AI Autopilot from $0.05 per conversation

Weaknesses:

  • Starter caps at 10 seats and one channel type
  • Copilot is $20/seat extra below Enterprise
  • Not built for high-volume consumer ticketing

Pricing: Starter $19, Professional $49.40, Enterprise $79.80 per seat per month billed annually ($25, $65 and $105 monthly).

Best for: B2B teams where every customer email involves someone outside support.

4. Gorgias

Built for ecommerce, and priced by tickets instead of seats.

Strengths:

  • Order data, refunds and edits inside the ticket
  • Deep Shopify integration
  • Seats stop being the pricing unit (500 on paid plans)
  • AI Agent included on every plan

Weaknesses:

  • Seasonal spikes hit the bill through overage
  • AI interactions cost $0.90 each on annual plans, and they also count as tickets
  • Little value if you don't sell online

Pricing: Starter $40/month (monthly only, 50 tickets, 3 seats). Basic is $77/month billed annually for 300 tickets, Pro $471/month for 2,000. Overage runs $0.36-$0.40 per ticket. More in our Gorgias alternatives post.

Best for: Shopify stores with a big ticket load and a small team.

5. Intercom

Chat and AI first. Help Scout's opposite in feel.

Strengths:

  • Fin is one of the most capable AI agents in support
  • Messenger, product tours and proactive messages in one place
  • Strong for in-app SaaS support

Weaknesses:

  • Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, on top of seats
  • Email support is weaker than the chat side
  • Costs are hard to predict as AI volume grows

Pricing: Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat per month. Fin is $0.99 per outcome. If you'd rather own the AI layer, see Intercom alternatives.

Best for: SaaS teams whose support happens in the product, over chat.

6. Helply (formerly Groove)

Groove was the classic "simpler Help Scout." It's now Helply, and the model flipped.

Strengths:

  • Seats are free, so headcount never touches the bill
  • AI agents bill per outcome (drafts, resolutions, record updates)
  • Monthly spending cap available

Weaknesses:

  • $99/month minimum
  • A different product from the Groove people remember (existing customers stay on Groove Classic)
  • Outcome billing needs close watching at first

Pricing: $0 per seat, $0.50 per AI outcome after a 14-day trial, $99/month minimum.

Best for: Teams betting on AI doing a big share of the work.

7. Hiver

Help desk features inside Gmail.

Strengths:

  • Agents never leave Gmail
  • AI Agents and Copilot included on every plan

Weaknesses:

  • 2-seat minimum
  • SLAs and CSAT start on Pro
  • Tied to Google Workspace (Hiver Omni is the standalone version, same prices)

Pricing: Growth $25, Pro $55, Elite $85 per user per month billed annually ($35, $65 and $95 monthly).

Best for: Google Workspace teams that want Help Scout's simplicity without another tab.

8. Missive

The budget collaborative inbox.

Strengths:

  • Email, SMS and social in shared inboxes
  • AI from Anthropic, OpenAI and Gemini, with bring-your-own-key
  • Up to 1,000 rules on Productive

Weaknesses:

  • Lighter on help desk features: no knowledge base like Docs
  • Starter caps at 5 users
  • Analytics are basic below Business

Pricing: Starter $14, Productive $24, Business $36 per user per month, with 20% off billed yearly. 30-day trial.

Best for: Small teams that want shared email and chat at the lowest cost here.

9. Zoho Desk

The value pick, strongest inside the Zoho suite.

Strengths:

  • Free plan for 3 users
  • Zia AI built into Professional and Enterprise
  • Native links to Zoho CRM and the rest of the suite

Weaknesses:

  • Dense UI with a longer setup
  • Integrations thin out outside Zoho

Pricing: Free for 3 users. Zoho's pricing page didn't show USD rates for paid tiers when we checked, so confirm in your region.

Best for: Teams already running on Zoho.

10. FreeScout

Open source, AGPL, and built as a Help Scout clone.

Strengths:

  • Familiar shared-inbox UI for Help Scout users
  • Runs on plain PHP/MySQL hosting
  • Paid modules add knowledge base, chat and workflows

Weaknesses:

  • You own upgrades, backups and email deliverability
  • Features come piecemeal through modules

Pricing: Free to self-host. Some modules are paid. For chat-heavy teams, Chatwoot is the other open source pick (cloud from $19/agent/month). We compare both in Zendesk alternatives.

Best for: Small teams with someone willing to run a server.

11. Build Your Own with the Help Desk Kit

Some teams aren't really looking for another help desk. They run a SaaS or a platform, and support needs to sit inside it: a customer portal, white-labeled support for their clients' users, or a vertical workflow no generic tool fits.

What this looks like:

  • Your backend owns tickets, customers and messages
  • The Help Desk Kit provides the frontend: 110 screens for tickets, a live chat UI, a knowledge base with a Markdown article editor, customers, reports, automations with AI assist, team and settings
  • It ships with seed data. You wire up the database, email delivery and real-time messaging yourself
  • $131 one-time for solo, with no per-agent fee

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Help Scout priced per user or per contact?

Per user on the public page: $25, $45 and $75 per user per month billed annually. Help Scout tried contact-based billing from late 2024 and reversed it in 2025. Some accounts that moved over are still billed per contact, so check your invoice.

What is the cheapest Help Scout alternative?

FreeScout, if you can self-host it. Hosted, Zoho Desk is free for 3 users and Missive starts at $14 per user. Freshdesk Growth at $19 per agent is the cheapest full help desk here.

What is the best Help Scout alternative for AI?

Intercom's Fin is the most proven, at $0.99 per outcome. Hiver includes AI Agents and Copilot in every plan. Helply bills $0.50 per AI outcome with no seat fees. Help Scout's own AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution.

Is there an open source alternative to Help Scout?

Yes. FreeScout is an AGPL clone of Help Scout's shared inbox that runs on basic PHP hosting. Chatwoot is the open source pick if live chat and social channels matter more than email.

How hard is it to migrate off Help Scout?

Conversations, customers and Docs articles all come out through Help Scout's API, and most competitors offer importers or migration services. Move open conversations and customers first, keep Help Scout read-only for history, and rebuild saved replies and workflows by hand.

The Honest Take

Help Scout is still the right tool for a small team that mostly answers email and values calm over configurability. Leaving costs time, and moving to a heavier tool can make agents slower.

The alternatives win on something specific: routing depth (Zendesk, Freshdesk), shared customer threads (Front), commerce data (Gorgias), AI (Intercom, Helply, Hiver), price (Missive, Zoho Desk), or no license fee at all (FreeScout).

Pick the one thing Help Scout isn't doing for you, and choose the tool that does it best. If support belongs inside the product you're building, own the interface and skip the seat math for good.
